Frank Montis, born Frank van den Berge on April 17, 1974, in Terneuzen, Netherlands, is a noted hammond organist, pianist, and singer. His music primarily encompasses genres such as jazz, blues, funk, and soul. Influenced by renowned American organists like Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, and Jack McDuff, Montis developed an early interest in music, playing on a Hammond B3 organ purchased by his father.
At 19, Montis decisively chose a career in music. Post-conservatory, he spent years as a session musician and formed his own piano trio. He played the Hammond organ and lead vocals for “Day by Day” by the Dutch Nu jazz group The Jazzinvaders. This connection led to his collaboration with saxophonist Rolf Delfos, with whom he founded DelMontis in 2010. Montis has also been a part of The Soul Snatchers.
Montis worked with the formation Laura Vane & The Vipertones, contributing to several albums on vintage keys and the Hammond organ. DelMontis released their debut album “Straightforward Fascination” in September 2011, featuring Montis’s songs, vocals, and keys. From the beginning of 2014, Montis collaborated with the group Gare Du Nord as a keyboardist and composer.
Since 2016, he has been playing in the trio Montis, Goudsmit, and Directie, and in October 2022, his band SPARK evolved into The Pulitzers. Additionally, from August 2023, he formed the musical duo Mr. Montis & Me with Rachel van der Schaaf.
Montis’s discography includes albums with The Jazzinvaders, Laura Vane & The Vipertones, Delmontis, The Soul Snatchers, Gare Du Nord, and his own projects like the Frank Montis Organ Trio, Montis, Goudsmit & Directie, The Pulitzers and Happy Village..
